Ndikwe my roots-where it all started

Growing up as a young man, Engineer Karanja Mburu Wamatangi saw it all. Hailing from Murang’a County, Kiharu Constituency he attended his primary education at Ndikwe Primary. It’s during an era where things were tough, from going to school barefooted to having to walk for miles in pursuit of water. A school with a nearby stream those days was the prestige of the community. However in most cases they had to cease the day’s lessons two hours before the set time to go home. So that they can embark on the journey to source for water from the stream in order to do their duties.

At that tender age he made a vow to be the change his community deserves. Almost 20 years later Wamatangi decided to give back to the community that saw him through school. Having struggled with inadequate water sources, in 2014 he embarked on a project to construct a 300,000 litres water tank at Ndikwe Primary. It’s a project that greatly benefited the community at large. The parents, guardians more so Ndikwe residents were involved in the construction project right from scratch. The school fraternity being the major benefactor in this mega tank project. With the availability of water in their vicinity the story at Ndikwe now changed. Instead of leaving classes early in pursuit of water, they began remedial classes so that they raise their academic bar.

2015 January kicked off the era of new beginnings at Ndikwe primary. As the tank Commissioning took place it was all smiles. It was evident in KCPE results that year that saw the mean score rise and a higher number of them admitted to form one. Additionally, as a way of benefitting generations to come, Wamatangi marked on a renovation project in the school. He renovated all the iron sheets in the school to ensure a smooth learning process. With comfortable classrooms, adequate water, the challenge became lack of funds for needy students. Experience being the best teacher he also initiated an academic sponsorship programme that has seen over 15 students enrolled in it from this school.

Samuel Mwatha made history as the first student to be sponsored by Wamatangi. To Wamatangi giving is a gift that never ceases, that’s why each year Ndikwe Primary is among the schools that benefits from the annual feeding program under his organization.

Ndikwe Primary School Water Tank is also in Remembrance of Rochelle and Barrett Scheuermann who extended the gift of their kindness to Ndikwe residents. Let’s never forget our roots no matter where we go, Wamatangi leads by example.
