With a population of more than 300 pupils,Gitige Primary School in Wangu Ward Kiharu Constituency had access to water through a local stream which is one kilometer from the school. The pupils had to treck around 45 minutes daily to go fetch water there for drinking, washing their classes and watering their crops in the school gardens.
Imagine carrying a 5 litres jerrican for 45 minutes daily. Thats time wasted, time that could be used by the pupils to study. This had been the norm since the establishment of the school around 40 years ago.
It’s this reason that the school management led by the Headteacher and the school board, wrote to us a proposal. In their proposal, they had indicated that they already had a halt tank due to lack of funds, and if we could we could support them complete the tank.
We visited the school with our engineers and the tank they wanted us to help them, halted more than 30 years. Our engineers examined the old tank and they advised that it couldn’t be revived and so we had to build a new one for them.
With the help of Fresh Water Church based in Minnesota USA, the project started immediately and on 6th March 2023, three months later, we commissioned the tank. In the commissioning ceremony, the pupils could not hide their joy a sign that the stress of carrying water to schools is over and they will concentrate on their studies. We say every drop counts, and it really counts on this pupils.
